From 1952 until 1982, the FAMAS Award was historically regarded as the highest honor a filmmaker or artist could get in the Filipino film industry. The Philippine equivalent of the Oscars, however, the Film Academy of the Philippines (Luna) Awards, was created in 1982. The FAMAS Awards were hence unofficially regarded as being below the Luna Awards. Despite this, because of their lengthy history, the FAMAS Awards continue to enjoy tremendous prestige and respect.
Overall, the FAMAS Awards are very important in identifying and celebrating the abilities and accomplishments of people in the Philippine film industry.
