FAMAS Awards

The FAMAS Awards, commonly known as the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards, are an annual ceremony honoring outstanding contributions to Philippine cinema. The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS), a group of prize-winning authors and movie columnists, bestows the awards.

The FAMAS Awards have been giving out awards to members of the Philippine film industry since 1952, making it one of the oldest organizations in Asia. It occupies a prominent place in the neighborhood film industry. Members of the academy, comprising ardent moviegoers, admirers, and enthusiasts, cast votes to decide the winners in different categories to determine the FAMAS Award winners.

From 1952 until 1982, the FAMAS Award was historically regarded as the highest honor a filmmaker or artist could get in the Filipino film industry. The Philippine equivalent of the Oscars, however, the Film Academy of the Philippines (Luna) Awards, was created in 1982. The FAMAS Awards were hence unofficially regarded as being below the Luna Awards. Despite this, because of their lengthy history, the FAMAS Awards continue to enjoy tremendous prestige and respect.

The Manila Hotel in Manila hosted the 71st Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards on August 13, 2023. The best Filipino movies that were released in 2022 were honored at this prestigious event.

On August 1, a post on the FAMAS organization’s official Facebook page announced the nominees for the FAMAS Awards. The drama movie “Family Matters” stood out among the nominees because it garnered the most nominations (12 in all). Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Cinematography were among the nominations.

“Family Matters” made its world premiere at the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2022, and it received praise from critics for its superb storytelling and production. It was not surprising that FAMAS gave the movie such high praise.

“Family Matters” won the most prizes in the evening, taking home four in total. Its status as the best movie of the year was cemented when it received the coveted Best Picture, Oscar. Nadine Lustre, an actress, won the Best Actress prize for her amazing performance at the FAMAS Awards, which was another noteworthy accomplishment.

Another notable film of the evening was “Blue Room,” which received three awards. Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan was honored as the Best Director for her exceptional work in bringing the film to life. Neil Daza’s expertise in cinematography was recognized with the Best Cinematography award, highlighting his ability to capture visually stunning scenes. Additionally, the film was acknowledged for its captivating musical score, which earned it the Best Musical Score award.
