Hansika was born into a Sindhi family in Mumbai, mother Mona Motwani, a dermatologist, and father Pradeep Motwani, a businessman. The actress first attended Podar International School and then International Curriculum School, in Mumbai. Hansika’s association with the world of acting began with television. Young Hansika first appeared in the television series ‘Shakala Bunbun’ on Star Plus. She then played the lead role in the drama serial Desh Mein Nikla Hoga Chand, she won the Favorite Child award at the Star Parivar Awards. Soon, she made her first on-screen appearance in the film Koi Mil Gaya (2003), co-starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta.
