The other event on March 8th is Maha Shivaratri. This was a festival celebrated annually by Hindus to worship the deity Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu calendar, it is the fourteenth day of the dark half of the lunar month. They worship lord shiva on this occasion and conduct Girivalam which is waking up to 1-4 kilometers barefoot. According to some legends, this day is when Lord Shiva and Parvati got married. This day is celebrated to overcome the committed past sins, recover resilience, encourage self-discovery, and discover a victorious path. Devotees offer traditional items such as bilva leaves, milk, fruits, and bael (wood apple) leaves to the Shiva Lingam, a symbol representing Lord Shiva.
