Mukesh Ambani
Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani is an Indian Billionaire and businessman born on April 19, 1957. He is the Chairman and Managing Director of India’s most valuable company by market value, Reliance Industries. As of August 2023, his net worth is estimated at $91.2 billion, making him the wealthiest person in Asia and the 13th globally. He is sometimes called a plutocrat. He has gained fame and recognition through reporting on market manipulation, political corruption, nepotism, and exploitation. Time magazine named him one of the Titans’ 100 most influential people in 2019. Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani was born on April 19, 1957, in the British colony of Aden (now Yemen) to Dhirubhai Ambani and Kokilaben Ambani into a Gujarati Hindu family. He has his younger brother Anil Ambani and two sisters, Neena Bhadrashyam Kothari and Dipti Dattaraj Salgaonkar.
Ambani lived in Yemen only briefly as his father decided to return to India in 1958 to start a trading company focused on spices and textiles. The latter was initially called “Vimal” but was later changed to “Only Vimal”. His family lived in his modest two-room apartment in Bureshwar, Mumbai, until the 1970s. Although the family’s financial situation improved slightly when they moved to India, Ambani still lived in a community, used public transportation, and received no support. Dhirubhai later bought a 14-story apartment building in Colaba called Sea Wind, where Ambani and her brother lived with their families on separate floors until recently.
Mukesh Ambani’s Personal Life
Mukesh Ambani got married in 1985 to Nita Ambani and they have two sons, Akash and Anant, and a daughter, Isha, who is Akash’s twin. They met when Nita’s father attended a dance performance that Nita also participated in, and they came up with the idea of arranging their marriage. They live in Antilia, his 27-story private house in Mumbai worth $1 billion, which at the time of its construction was the most expensive private house in the world. He needs 600 employees to maintain the building, which includes three helipads, a 160-car garage, a private cinema, a swimming pool, and a fitness center.
In 2007, Ambani gifted his wife an Airbus A319 worth $60 million for her 44th birthday. The 180-passenger Airbus is individually decorated and includes a living room, bedroom, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, sky bar, hot tub, and office. Ambani was named the world’s richest sports team owner after purchasing IPL cricket team Mumbai Indians for $111.9 million in 2008. Mukesh Ambani is a strict vegetarian and an ascetic. He has reportedly decided to relinquish his annual salary of approximately Rs 240 million as chief of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) for the financial year ending March 31, 2012. He decided to do so even as the total remuneration of RIL’s top executives has increased this quarter.
Mukesh Ambani holds 50.4% of the company’s shares. The move capped his annual salary at Rs 150 million for the fourth consecutive year. In early 2019, a court in Mumbai found his brother Anil Ambani in contempt for failing to pay a personal guarantee debt owed by Reliance Communications to Swedish equipment maker Ericsson. Instead of a prison sentence, the court gave Anil one month to collect funds. At the end of the month, Mukesh rescued his brother and paid off his debt. In 2021, a green Mahindra Scorpio SUV loaded with explosives was found near a Mumbai high-rise where Ambani was staying and was the target of a bomb attack.
Mukesh Ambani’s Career
In 1981, he started helping his father Dhirubhai Ambani run the family business, Reliance Industries Limited. By this time, the company had already expanded to include activities in the refining and petrochemical sectors. His other subsidiary, Reliance Retail Ltd., is also India’s largest retailer. Reliance’s Jio has secured one of the top five telecom services in the country since its public launch on September 5, 2016 [further explanation needed]. In 2016, Ambani was the 36th richest person in the world and has consistently held the title of India’s richest person in the Forbes list for the past 10 years. He is the only Indian businessman to be featured on Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s most powerful people.
In October 2020, Mukesh Ambani was ranked as the 6th richest person in the world by Forbes magazine. In July 2018, he overtook Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma to become Asia’s richest person with a net worth of $44.3 billion. He is also the richest person in the world outside of North America and Europe. Ambani was ranked fifth among India’s philanthropists in 2015, according to China’s Hurun Research Institute.
He is also the owner of the Indian Premier League franchise, Mumbai Indians, through Reliance and is the founder of the Indian Super League, an Indian football league. He lives in Antilia, one of the most expensive private residences in the world, worth up to $1 billion.
Mukesh Ambani’s Education
Ambani attended Hill Grange High School on Peddar Road in Mumbai, along with his older brother and later his close aide Anand Jain. After completing his secondary education, he studied at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Chemical Institute of Technology. Ambani went on to earn an MBA from Stanford University but dropped out in 1980 to help out at Reliance, a company founded by his father.
Reliance was a small but rapidly growing company at the time. His father believed that real-world skills could be better applied through his experience than sitting in a classroom, so he brought his son back to India from Stanford University to take charge of his company’s yarn manufacturing project. Ambani reportedly said he was influenced by his teacher, William F. Kennedy. Mr. Sharp and Mr. Man Mohan Sharma are “the kind of professors who make you think outside the box.”
