Rakul Preet Singh was born in New Delhi on October 10, 1990 and grew up in a Sikh family. She received her formal education at the Army Public School, after which she enrolled in the mathematics program at the College of Jesus and Mary. Her father served in the military. Her father is Kulwinder Singh and her mother is Rajender Kaur. Her younger brother Aman Preet Singh was selected as the actor for his Bollywood debut in Ram Raja. Singh bought a house in Mumbai and a residence in Hyderabad in 2020.

Having always wanted to be an actress, Singh began her career as a model at the age of 18 while still a student. She began her acting career in the 2009 film Gilli, a Kannada translation of director Selvaraghavan’s 7G Rainbow Colony. She claimed that her main motivation for taking part in the film was “to earn some pocket money”. She also added that she did not realize how popular South Indian films were until she returned home after completing her studies and participated in the Femina Miss India contest (2011).
