Thiruvothu’s acting career began with the 2006 Malayalam film Out of Syllabus. Her performance in the Tamil romantic drama Poo (2008) earned her the Film-fare Award South for Best Tamil Actress. Her second project, Rosshan Andrews’ Notebook, attracted media attention for its theme of teenage pregnancy. She was selected from 5,000 applicants as one of the three leading roles, alongside Roma Asrani and Mariya Roy. She also starred in Sathyan Anthikkad’s comedy-drama film Vinodayatra (2007), in which she played a supporting role alongside an ensemble cast that included Dileep, Mukesh and Meera Jasmine.
She was surprisingly selected for the film alongside Puneeth Rajkumar and began production on the film in April 2007. The film received mixed reviews, but the actress’ role was praised. One critic stated that she was “a great choice for the role” and added that “she has the right attitude for the role”. The film was a huge commercial success and ran for 500 days at a multiplex cinema in Bangalore.
